Recker and Haley had just finished getting patched up by Vincent’s doctor. By the time they exited the office, Vincent had now joined Malloy in waiting for them.

“You two almost look less than decent,” Malloy said, getting a laugh from the two men being worked on.

“Almost,” Haley replied.

“So what’s the verdict?” Vincent asked.

“I’m fine,” Haley answered. “Might just take a little while for some of these cuts and bruises to heal.”

“And you?” Vincent asked, looking at Recker.

“I’m ready to go again,” Recker said.

Vincent took a careful look at Recker, not noticing any obvious signs of him being shot, other than a small bandage on his forearm.

“You look remarkably well for a man who’s been shot.”

“I got lucky,” Recker said. “Low-powered bullet, didn’t hit any bones, just gotta try and take it easy for a bit.”

“We all know how that will go.”

“We’ll see.”

Recker was in a little worse shape than he let on, and in a little pain, but he wasn’t going to show it. Not there. Besides the bandage on his arm, he also had one on his side and one on the back of his shoulder. The shoulder wound was the one he had to be careful about. Though it didn’t hit any major organs, muscles, or bones, he was still advised to keep it as still as possible for the next few weeks. Recker wasn’t sure how well he was going to be able to follow those directions with the Scorpions still on the loose. And with them taking a massive number of casualties, now was still the time to strike. Luckily, the wounded shoulder wasn’t his shooting arm. Though he was able to shoot with both hands, and his off-hand, his left, was still better than most people’s best, he was still more comfortable shooting right-handed.

“What are your plans from here?” Vincent asked.

“Same as before,” Recker answered. “Get rid of them when the opportunity is there.”

Vincent nodded, thinking of his options. “We may have an opportunity now.”

“How so?”

“By my count they’ve lost, what, seventeen men?”

“Sounds about right.”

“We should strike while the iron is hot.”

“We?!”

“I believe the time is right for me to get involved now.”

“No offense, but why?”

Vincent smiled. “Let’s just say the numbers are more to my liking now.”

Recker looked at him curiously, wondering what his motive was now. But, he wasn’t going to ask a lot of questions. They needed all the help they could get, especially now.

“Don’t misunderstand my lack of action before as being weak or stupid,” Vincent said. “I know full well that the Scorpions always have intended to dispose of me after going after you. But I always strike when the time is right for me. No one else.”

“Why is now that time?”

“Their numbers are lower, they’re probably questioning themselves, morale for them is low, and I think I can use my position to lure them deeper. Plus, judging by the faces of you two, it looks like you could use the help.”

“You have something in mind?” Recker asked.

“I do.”

“You gonna share?”

“When the time is right.
